Why I Still Set Goals Every Year (And Why You Should Too)
I figured I’d jump on here and share a quick thought as we head into a new year.
When I first started in real estate, my broker at the time made us sit down at the beginning of every single year and physically write out our goals for the year ahead. At the time, it felt a little formal — but looking back, that habit stuck with me for a reason. I still do it to this day.
There’s something powerful about starting the year with intention. Without goals or direction, it’s easy to feel stagnant. You stay busy, but you’re not always moving forward — and sometimes you’re not even sure what you’re working toward.
And this doesn’t just apply to work.
Goals can (and should) cover all areas of life — career, health, mental health, relationships, or personal time. They don’t have to be complicated or overwhelming. They just need to be clear.
What Goal Setting Looks Like for Me
In my business, I set goals like:
- How many new people I want to meet
- How many “sides” I want to sell (that means listings and buyer representation)
Those small, measurable goals help keep me focused and accountable throughout the year.
I also always set health goals — whether that’s losing a few pounds, working out a certain number of times per week, taking time to meditate, or simply carving out time for myself. Those goals matter just as much as business ones.
Make It Real
If there’s one thing I recommend, it’s this:
- Write your goals down
- Put a date on them
- Reward yourself when you hit them
That part matters more than people realize. It keeps you motivated and gives you something to work toward — and it truly does help. I know because it’s helped me.
As we head into the new year, I hope you take a little time to sit down and map out what you want for yourself. It doesn’t have to be perfect — it just has to be intentional.
And as always, if you have questions about the real estate market or what’s happening locally, feel free to reach out.
